Reimagining Wastewater for Africa’s Future
The Phoenix Wastewater Innovation Lab is an African wastewater engineering research group developing scalable, resource-efficient wastewater treatment and recovery solutions for African industries and municipalities.
Wastewater Innovation for the African Industry.
THE CHALLENGE
Africa faces a growing burden of water pollution driven by industrialisation, urban expansion, and climate variability. High-strength industrial wastewater often fails to meet discharge standards, threatening environmental integrity and human health. At the same time, wastewater management practices remain fragmented, energy-intensive, and poorly adapted to local contexts.
The Phoenix Wastewater Innovation Lab is hosted at the University of Cape Town and led by Associate Professor Moses Basitere.
The Lab advances applied wastewater engineering research, strengthens wastewater expertise, and works with government and industry to develop practical solutions for long-term water security.
OUR APPROACH
Our vision is an Africa where industries use water responsibly, creating value while protecting human health and the environment.
Our mission is to advance wastewater engineering research and capacity building, and to partner with government and industry to develop innovative, value-enhancing solutions that support long-term water security.
TO ACHIEVE THIS, WE FOCUS ON THREE INTERCONNECTED OBJECTIVES —

Research Innovation
Advancing applied research on sustainable industrial wastewater treatment and resource recovery, with a focus on affordable technologies, designed for African industrial contexts.

Capacity Building
Strengthening African wastewater research capacity through postgraduate training, postdoctoral development, mentorship, and cross-university collaboration.

Research Translation
Partnering with government, industry and research partners to translate research into practical guidance, treatment systems, policy support, and industry-ready solutions.
Evidence, tools and technologies for cleaner water.
OUR RESEARCH
Our research develops evidence, tools and technologies to help industries improve wastewater quality, recover value from waste streams, and protect environmental and human health.
01
Wastewater Analysis and Modelling
We work with industry partners s to analyse wastewater quality, understand sector-specific challenges, and model how water quality may change under different management or growth scenarios.

02
Treatment and Resource Recovery
We design and test affordable treatment technologies for African industrial contexts, with a focus on improving water quality and recovering energy, nutrients and reusable water.

03
Industry Pilots and Performance
We test promising systems at industrial sites to refine performance under African operating conditions. Systems include anaerobic reactors, nanobubble technologies, membranes and nutrient recovery.

Cleaner Water, Stronger Industries and Healthier Environments.
LEADERSHIP & VISION

Industrial wastewater is one of Africa's most urgent water quality challenges and also presents an opportunity for innovation. The Phoenix Wastewater Innovation Lab operates on the principle that wastewater can be treated as a resource, helping industries reduce pollution, recover value, and improve long-term water security.
Led by Associate Professor Moses Basitere, the Lab combines applied engineering research with industry engagement and capacity development. Its work is grounded in the realities of African industries and municipalities, where cost, infrastructure, technical skills and local operating conditions shape what can be adopted in practice.
Through its research, the Lab is strengthening the pipeline of industry-ready wastewater specialists, advancing research-led best practices to improve water quality and environmental health, and enhancing guidance, resources, and support for industrial innovation and quality improvement.
By developing treatment systems with industry, training African wastewater researchers, and translating research into practical tools and guidance, the Phoenix Wastewater Innovation Lab is helping build cleaner, more resilient and more sustainable water systems for Africa.
